Break Through to Awakening
Overcoming Obstacles on the Spiritual Path
Five-Week Buddhism Course
Starts Wednesday 23rd October 2024, 7.15pm – 9.30pm
Led by Sadayasihi and Jyotika
The main metaphor the Buddha used to describe his teaching was of a path leading to Enlightenment. But sometimes we encounter obstacles on the path that prevent us from making further progress. What should we do then?
On this course we explore this question and consider that sometimes a slow and gentle progression is not possible. Instead, we may have to break, or even smash, through the obstacle standing in our way! Obstacles such as:
- Negative emotions
- Psychological conditionings
- Rational thinking
- Adhereance to clock time
We also contemplate the ‘wrathful’ figure of Vajrapani – Wielder of the Thunderbolt – as a symbol of breaking through into Buddhahood.
Participants will receive the book Breaking Through into Buddhahood as part of the course.
The course will include short talks, discussion, reflection, meditation, and home practice that should be completed between each week of the course. Each week there will be a particular theme explored as follows:
Week 1 – Breaking through into what?
Week 2 – Breaking through our negative emotions
Week 3 – Breaking through our psychological conditionings
Week 4 – Breaking through our rational thinking
Week 5 – Breaking through our sense of time
Note: While meditation will be part of this course, you will not be learning how to meditate. Please see our other events for an introduction to meditation course.
This course is for anyone who wants to engage with a deeper understanding and practice of Buddhist teachings.
You don’t have to be a Buddhist to gain from this course; you don’t have to be particularly ‘spiritual’. All you need is curiosity, a desire to learn, and a willingness to put what you learn into practice.
This course will be led by Sadayasihi and Jyotika, members of the Triratna Buddhist Order.
