The Journey and the Guide

Eight-Week Buddhism Course

Starts Thursday 4th September 2025, 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Led by Vajrashura

How do we make the most of life? We all want to live a valuable and fulfilling life. We want our life to be our own, not predictable, boring or mapped out by others.

It is this kind of problem that the Buddha sought to solve, firstly in his own life and then, after Enlightenment, in his teaching.

On this eight-week course you’ll be guided by the Buddha’s vision in an exploration of the fundamental issues of life, facing up to them, finding a way of overcoming them, and uncovering your human potential.

We begin by cultivating a ‘fit’ mind, as fitness is important for any journey. Then we permeate it with positive emotion, so that we can face into challenges on the way. Then there is ‘spiritual death’ – letting go or going beyond that which restricts us. Finally, we come to ‘spiritual rebirth’, experiencing more and more what it is like to have a ‘Buddha mind’.

Participants will receive Maitreyabandhu’s book The Journey and the Guide as part of the course.

Over the eight weeks we will cover:

  • Week 1: Introducing the Journey and the Guide.
  • Week 2: Supports for a ‘Fit Mind’.
  • Week 3: Positive Emotion: The Stage of Action.
  • Week 4: Positive Emotion: Other People.
  • Week 5: Spiritual Death.
  • Week 6: The View that Creates Itself.
  • Week 7: Spiritual Rebirth and Imagination.
  • Week 8: Shraddha: Imagination Looking Up.

Vajrashura started practicing yoga and learnt to meditate while in university doing a Masters in High Performance Computing. He has worked as part of the Centre Team since 2002 and in 2007 he joined the Triratna Buddhist Order.

Since ordination, he’s been one of the DBC’s main teachers, leading many courses, retreats, and events each year, and is concerned with helping people go more deeply into meditation and Buddhism.

This course is for anyone who wants to engage with a deeper understanding and practice of Buddhism.

You don’t have to be a Buddhist to gain from this course; you don’t have to be particularly ‘spiritual’. All you need is curiosity, a desire to learn, and a willingness to put what you learn into practice.
